introduction by Guy Peters
The film and the concert later this evening will be extensively introduced by Guy Peters.
Gilles Groulx’s first feature-length fiction film, in which he incorporates documentary-style techniques and a soundtrack that features music by John Coltrane. The cast consists of non-professional actors, the dialogue is improvised, and the continuous shooting in natural settings ensures the spontaneity and authenticity characteristic of documentary productions. Through the story of a couple in their twenties, this film raises the fundamental question of the Quebec people’s political coming of age, as perceived by a filmmaker driven by ideals and the pursuit of the absolute.
For the soundtrack Gilles Groulx, a great admirer of Coltrane, travelled to New Jersey himself to record Coltrane’s band directly in his studio. The recordings can be found on the posthumous album entitled Blue World, released in 2019. Coltrane did not record any new tracks for the soundtrack; instead, he drew on his existing discography.
