William Kentridge starts every project in his Johannesburg studio, producing numerous drawings before opening his doors to a variety of collaborators. Actors, musicians, singers, video and animation technicians join him to evolve his art into full-scale installations and performances.
Kentridge’s collaborative spirit was forged in the turbulent Johannesburg of the 1980s, through his work with local theatre groups. This openness is not limited to contemporary creatives; it extends to a dialogue with playwrights, literary figures, thinkers, and revolutionaries hailing from different times and places.
To mark his solo exhibition I am not me, the horse is not mine at Bozar, Kentridge will reflect on his practice in this talk. They will explore the entanglement of artistic and socio-political realities, the nature of artistic collaboration, and the uniquely performative character of Kentridge’s work.
William Kentridge, in collaboration with The Centre for the Less Good Idea, is Bozar’s first Grand Invité: a leading artist who will not only present his own work but also curate part of the season’s programming.
